'Brown Pelican'  - Monotype 1/1 - $160 - sold
Monotype - a 'one off", unique print.  It is usually made by rolling, painting, and otherwise manipulating printing
inks onto a flat plate which is then run through a press.  It is the closest method of printing that is similar to direct painting. Other kinds of printing usually include making permanent marks on a printing surface, which can then be reproduced over and over, to create an edition. A monotype leaves an image of leftover ink on the plate, which sometimes can be printed in a pale version of the original print.  This is called a "ghost" image, and does not look like the first print.  The printer may choose to repaint the plate using the ghost image as a guide, but it will be quite different from the first print.  This is exemplified in "Voodoo Lily I" and Voodoo Lily II" which you will see later on this page.
